Harvest Festival in Wąwolnica
This year’s regional Harvest Festival was organized in Wąwolnica on August 29th and 30th. The organizers had planned plenty of interesting events – starting from a traditional Catholic mass, bread sharing, presentations at booths prepared by regional and social organizations, as well as competitions and folk art shows.
The event was co-organized by Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe „Puławy” S.A., which financed the awards for taking the top places in the competition of harvest wreaths. The Festival was also supported by the Mayor of Puławy and Puławy Forest Inspectorate.
Fire rescue competition of Voluntary Fire Brigades
On the first day of the holiday, a sporting and fire rescue competition was organized on the stadium next to the Fire Station in Wąwolnica. Teams from Voluntary Fire Brigades in Puławy region took part in the competition. This part of the event has been popular for years and has attracted considerable interest. The competition demonstrates the involvement of firefighters in the life of local communities and confirms the firemen preparation for their service as well as thorough training.
Traditional thanksgiving for the crops
On Sunday, the harvest celebrations took a more traditional form. The participants attended a Holy Mass at Wąwolnica Basilica. The ceremony was presided over by Bishop Ryszard Karpiński and Parish Priest Jerzy Ważny. Next, the participants formed a colorful harvest parade. This kind of celebrations highlights the work of the farmers and the involvement of organizations and communities which support agriculture and rural areas. At the same time, the parade helped to integrate the inhabitants of rural areas and the citizens of Puławy region.
The event was accompanied by shows of folk artists and competitions for the participants. The regional booths enjoyed great attendance, with the visitors eager to sample regional food and admire the folk art from Puławy Region.
Harvest wreaths competitions
The competition of harvest wreaths – both traditional and modern ones – in an important element of the annual event. Grupa Azoty PUŁAWY had the privilege to sponsor awards in the competition in two categories:
Traditional wreath category
1st place: “Kotlinianki” Choir from Żyrzyno
2nd place: “Kaolinki” Choir from Baranowo
3rd place: “Róża” Association from Końskowola
Honorable mention: KGW Żyrzyn
Modern wreath category
1st place: Wojszyn, Gmina Janowiec
2nd place: Rural Housewives’ Circle from Śniadówka
3rd place: Regional Association of Revival and Development “Wokół Bystrej” – Celejów
Honorable mention: “Nasza Wieś” Association from Żerdź
The awards were presented by the Vice Minister of Labour and Social Policy – Elżbieta Seredyn, Puławy region Administrator – Witold Popiołek, the Members of the Regional Board – Leszek Gorgol and Jan Ziomka, the Chairman of the Regional Board – Danuta Smaga, Wąwolnica Mayor – Marcin Łaguna, and Aleksandra Rucz, who represented Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe “Puławy” S.A.
A holiday of local communities
The organizers did their utmost to make this year’s Harvest Holiday an attractive and memorable event for the regional community. At the same time, many tourists gained an incentive to visit, as the celebrations provided an opportunity to witness the unique value of Puławy region culture – both its tangible and spiritual aspects.
