The event was organized by PUŁAWY Competences Center and it enjoyed the honorary patronage of Czesław Siekierski, the Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and an international association Fertilizers Europe.

The highlights of this year’s Conference included the presentation of a report: “Poland as an attractive food producer and provider”, a discussion about the faculties and syllabuses in the agri-food education sector, and the EU Directive concerning the protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources.

“Poland as an attractive food producer and provider” report

The Conference created an opportunity to present in an official manner the second report prepared by PUŁAWY Competences Center and called “Poland as an attractive food producer and provider”. Professor Janusz Igras, the Scientific Director at New Chemical Syntheses Institute in Puławy and the scientific editor of the report, said that “by publishing the document, we would like to spark off a discussion about the model of development of Polish agriculture in the future”.

The authors of the Report looked into the profitability of Polish agriculture, the options of financing the activity of agricultural entrepreneurs and the conditions which could help invigorate the agri-food sector, including promotional campaigns boosting the recognition of Polish brands. The Chairman of Grupa Azoty Board, Paweł Jarczewski, was confident that “it is thanks to such initiatives as PUŁAWY Competences Center that we can make an impact on shaping Polish agriculture. Let’s enjoy it, as agriculture is the engine of development of Polish economy at the moment”.

Current challenges in agricultural production

The Conference participants held a lively debate about educational paths preparing people to work in the agricultural and food industries. They also discussed the new regulations ensuing from EU Nitrates Directive. Zenon Pokojski Ph.D., the Vice-President of the Board of Grupa Azoty PUŁAWY and the coordinator of PUŁAWY Competences Center, drew the participants’ attention to the very high attendance rate at this year’s conference. He stressed the fact that such meetings and debates about the functioning of Polish agricultural production were essential for the future development of the sector. He added: „Here in Puławy, we encourage you to look at the agricultural and food sector from a new perspective, and ask: Where do we want to be in 2025?”
