50th anniversary of Nitrates Works establishment in 2016
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the official opening of our Works. In early June 1966, two crucial installations for the production of ammonia and urea were started up. One month later, the activity of Nitrates Works in Puławy was officially inaugurated.
Key investment in Eastern Poland
On August 5th 1960, the first page of Sztandar Ludu daily brought the news that “Chemistry is to enter Lublin area – a chemical plant is to be located in Puławy”. On December 21st 1960, the government revealed the final location, plans specifying the types of installations and the time frame of the construction of particular sections of the factory. The project prepared by various experts put that the overall cost of the investment at over 7 billion PLN.
The draft project of Puławy factory had been prepared by “ProSynChem”, a Chemical Industry Design Office. The plan was approved in early 1961 at a meeting of the Cabinet, and the Ministry of the Chemical Industry went on to prepare the detailed investment project. The estimated cost of the venture climbed to almost 8.5 billion PLN.
Beginning of the construction of the Works
Industrial installations were not the only part of the construction of the factory in Puławy. The plan included housing for Nitrates Works employees. The Ministry of Forestry and Timber Industry donated a forested area for this purpose in 1961. At the same time, a company called Zakłady Azotowe “Puławy” Under Construction was established, with Mieczysław Kołodziej as its manager and Jan Zdebik as the chief engineer.
The building of the Works was entrusted with Puławy Company of Industrial Construction in April 1962. In May 1963, an erection document was laid in the foundations of the power plant. With this event, the construction process of the Works began. The establishment of a chemical complex near Puławy was one of the largest industrial investments in the region in the second half of the 20th century. A few thousand people found employment at the construction site!
The town that developed with the factory
The emergence of the company boosted the growth of Puławy. Factory workers and engineers from all over the country came with their families to settle here. The Works provided a trigger that accelerated the development of the region, placing it on the map of industry in Poland.
